The way we learn is at a turning point. In a world evolving at lightning speed — with new technologies, internationalisation, and ever-increasing workplace demands - traditional training methods are no longer always the right fit.
So how do we keep people motivated to learn, despite full agendas, shifting needs and limited time?
That’s exactly what the 2024 Monitoring Report from the Flemish Government and Steunpunt Werk set out to explore. The findings are clear - and at times, confronting.
Lifelong learning in Flanders. Where do we stand?
The results of the 2024 Monitoring Report paint a sobering picture. While the need for learning and development is growing, lifelong learning is not yet a clear priority in Flanders. Key findings include:
-
Only 20% of respondents are willing to voluntarily take part in training.
-
1 in 3 companies struggles with work pressure and irregular schedules, making it hard to organise training during working hours.
-
95% of employers expect the skills of their workforce to evolve rapidly.
-
15% believe that more than 80% of their employees require continuous upskilling.
A misalignment between supply and need.
So the problem isn’t a lack of available training. And it’s not a lack of learning needs either. The real issue? A disconnect between what’s offered and what professionals actually need.
-
25.8% of adults who aren’t engaged in learning say they already have all the skills they need.
-
Another 25.3% don’t see the need because they’re not planning to switch jobs.
-
Meanwhile, employers foresee major shifts in skills and capabilities.
There’s clearly a gap between perceived and actual training needs. So how can we close it?
What does work? Learning that fits into life.
Among those who do participate in training, the story is quite different. When learning is flexible and relevant, people experience immediate value:
-
85.7% expect clear benefits from their training.
-
82.6% say they actively apply what they’ve learned in practice.
-
Key motivators for learning include flexibility in timing, content and approach.
